News from Year 7

Week 22, 1-5 March 2010

We had another terrific week at the BESG in Year 7. It was book week and our class heard an author speak and had an illustrator of books discuss her work. We also had the opportunity to visit a local newspaper here in Ankara. Jantay Abdychev wrote a short story called Two and a Half Wishes that I was privileged to read to all of the classes that visited the Year 7 classroom for a special story reading period this week. It was an enormous hit! Finally, on Friday students and some faculty & staff dressed in traditional costumes from around the world. I’m positive that this week will remain a memorable one for all students.

In current events, our class discussed and presented information on Russia. It is so exciting to learn about various world cultures and happenings. In science students have demonstrated acumen with the distance, rate, & time formula. That will come in very handy during our upcoming studies of astronomy. Our spelling/vocabulary test was the best of the year with 90% of the students improving in this area dramatically from Monday’s pre-test. Of the 41 words, the likes of succinct, frugal, vex, and exult were included.

Our spotlight award winners were Vincent Haller for his keen insights and participation in math & science and Ilse Alfonsi for her outstanding attention to detail in math & science leading to her success.

Looking forward to seeing students on Monday,
Ms. Penelope Ahearn Er
