Welcome to Year 3 30 August 2010
Dear Parents,
I was really glad to welcome Year 3 students to my classroom today. As a personal introduction, I earned my bachelor’s degree in Geology from the University of Arizona and my master’s degree in Education from the University of Phoenix. I worked as a Geologist & Hydrologist for 10 years before beginning a family. As a stay-at-home mom, I ran a certified in-home daycare for 8 years in Colorado, USA. Subsequently, I became a Classroom Assistant at the BESG for 4 years. While earning my master’s degree, I substitute taught for 3 years in the Palo Alto Unified School District and later taught for 2 years in Palo Alto, California. Last year I taught Year 7 at the BESG Ankara and this year I am happy to teach Year 3. I am both honoured and excited to be a part of the BESG scholastic environment.
Routines The following routines help the educational process flow smoothly:
*Classroom:The weekly timetable is generally followed.
*Personal Property: Children are expected to care for their own things including book bags, lunch boxes, coats, PE kits, shoes, and cold-weather clothing.
*Behaviour: The BESG Golden Rules are posted throughout the school and are of paramount importance to the classroom success of all. Additionally, we have 3 classroom rules. As a result of appropriate behaviour students will enjoy 30 minutes of Golden Time per week. The consequence of inappropriate behaviour is a reduction of Golden Time in 5-minute increments.
*Initiative:Children are beginning to take responsibility for their own learning; to think and make sensible decisions for themselves without having to consult with the teacher. They are encouraged to use their initiative.
Curriculum
The BESG curriculum is based on the English National Curriculum.
1. Maths & Literacy: There will be maths & literacy classes every day,
2. Physical Education: P.E. classes are on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.
a. Please ensure that your child has her/his full PE kit including team t-shirt, white shorts, & proper trainers.
b. No jewellery will be worn.
c. School track suit will be worn during the winter.
3. Information Communication Technology (ICT): Laptop computers are available to Year 3 for five hours per week.
4. Homework: There will be homework every week that will include at least spelling/vocabulary, reading, and maths. Children will be provided with a homework diary. It is the responsibility of each student to ensure that homework is entered into the diary and then checked off when complete.
End-of-Day Arrangements, Punctuality, & Absences:
1. If your child is absent from school due to illness, upon return he/she should provide me with a note so that I may mark the register appropriately.
2. If your child will be absent for any reason that is known in advance, please advise me prior to the absence.
3. The school bell rings at 8:40 am and classes begin at 8:45. Please be punctual.
If there is a change to your usual end-of-the-day arrangements, please notify me by noon of that day.
FPTA:
Year 3 needs a Classroom Representative to the FPTA. The FPTA is a supportive group of teachers, parents, and the Head Teacher that organizes social events and school functions. Joining the FPTA is a wonderful opportunity to help make the BESG Ankara an even more positive community for our children. If you are interested in enjoying full participation in the FPTA, please see Head Teacher, Ms. Dawn Akyurek.
Finally, I personally enjoy education very much. In keeping with the BESG Mission Statement, it is my personal goal to encourage all of my students to become responsible, happy, confident, life-long learners. I am looking forward to a terrific 2010-2011 school year with the BESG Year 3 students.
Sincerely,
Penelope S. Ahearn Er
