Year 1
Timings
Please remember that school starts at 8.45am. Your child should be at school by 8.40, ready to line up outside with the rest of the class when the bell rings. There are 2 teachers on duty in the playground to supervise the children before school.
Lateness can have a very negative effect on your child's learning & self-esteem. Please do try to be on time for school every day. A record of lateness will be kept during the year and will be recorded on your child's end of year report.
During wet or very cold weather the children must hang up their coats and bags, change their shoes and then go straight to the school hall, where they will be supervised until the bell rings at 8.40.
Shoes
All children require a pair of black outdoor shoes. They should also have a pair of black indoor shoes to change into. This is particularly important during poor weather. Indoor shoes should not be P.E. shoes. P.E. shoes or trainers can be any colour.
PLEASE NO LACES IF POSSIBLE!
Snacks and Lunch Time
All children have a snack mid-morning at about 10.15, which is eaten in the classroom. Please send a small snack, maybe a cookie, cake or piece of fruit in addition to their usual packed lunch.
PLEASE DO NOT SEND IN ANY FOOD CONTAINING NUTS
Lunch is eaten in the school hall, where the children are supervised by the lunchtime staff and by Nurse Karen. If you have any concerns about your child's eating please speak to Nurse Karen.
Book Bags
Book bags should be sent to school everyday.
Library
All classes have 2 library lessons a week, taught by Mrs. Kardas. These are on Monday and Wednesday. Every Wednesday your child will choose a library book to bring home for the week. It must be returned in your child's book bag by the following week, otherwise your child will not be able to choose a new book. Lost or damaged books must be replaced.
Music
Children in Year one have an hour of music a week taught by, Mrs. Sehirlioglu.
Turkish
Children in Years 1 & 2 are taught half an hour of Turkish each week by Miss. Dilcan. The children work together in mixed classes according to their level of spoken Turkish.
Behaviour
Children are rewarded for good behaviour & work with team points, stickers and certificates. At the BESG we follow 6 Golden Rules. These are:
- We look after property
- We are honest
- We are gentle
- We are kind & helpful
- We work hard
- We listen
Each week children receive Golden Time (2x30mins) as a reward for keeping the rules.
On Friday 2 children from each class are chosen by their teachers to receive a certificate in Friday assembly.
Homework
Literacy - Children receive weekly Literacy homework. This is sent on a Friday and should be returned the following Tuesday.
Reading - All children in Year One receive 2 reading books a week (either on Monday & Wednesday or on Tuesday & Thursday) which they should share at home with you and return the next day. Please write a short comment in their Reading Record to show that this has been done. We shall also be sending home word cards to be learned throughout the year. On Friday your child chooses their own reading book to bring home and share with you.
Mathematics - The children receive weekly Maths homework. This is sent home on a Thursday and should be returned the following Monday.
Toys
Toys should not be brought into school unless specifically requested by the teacher.
Birthdays
We are happy to celebrate your child's birthday in Year One. However due to time constraints it is impossible for parties to be arranged. It would be much more preferable if you could send in individual cup-cakes or cookies that the children could share at snack time. We would like to request that you give us notice if you wish to bring in cakes or snacks on the day and again, please remember NO NUTS.
We are also happy to distribute birthday invitations for you, but in line with school policy, we will only be able to do this if every child in the class has been invited.
Uniform / Clothes
Children should all by now have a P.E. kit at school, with their team t-shirt, white shorts and a pair of trainers (not indoor shoes). These are sent home each half term for washing.
We also encourage children at this age to begin to take responsibility for their own possessions, but occasionally things do get temporarily mislaid. To avoid this happening PLEASE LABEL ALL CLOTHES CLEARLY WITH YOUR CHILD'S NAME.
Please remember that jewellery should not be worn to school. Stud earrings are the only exception.
All long hair must be tied back for hygiene and safety reasons.
Appointments
The school holds a Parents' Evening each term, where we are able to discuss your child's individual progress. However if you would like discuss any other issues I am happy for you to make an appointment to see me. Please do this either by emailing me,
pchaudhry@besg.org or by writing a note in your child's Home/School Book. These are checked daily.
