CALENDAR: Parents are issued a detailed list of
important dates at the beginning of each school year.
This will be added to or changed as the year progresses.
During the year in-service training days for staff are
arranged, which may require school closure. This is
limited to a maximum of two days per year.
CHILD PROTECTION: The BESG is committed to
protecting and safeguarding children. Details of our
child protection policy, in line with UK
recommendations, are available via the school office.
CONTACT NUMBERS: In the event of sickness or
accident it is most important that the Study Group has
an up to date contact number. The office should be
informed of any changes of address or telephone number.
Details of any medical conditions are also required and
health forms are required to be completed prior to
entry. The nurse must be informed of any changes to a
child’s medical condition (see also Medicine below).
If you are away from home, please ensure that the Study
Group has the name and phone number of a local person
who is responsible for your children, whom we can
contact and who is able to communicate fluently in
English.
CONCERNS / COMPLIANTS:
Introduction: The school has an ‘open policy’, in
that parents are able to arrange an appointment at a
mutually suitable time with their child’s teacher. This
is in addition to the initial talk to parents at the
start of the school year and the formal meetings agreed
each term.
Steps to follow: Where parents have a
concern, or wish to share a concern from home, the
following are the steps that can be taken.
- Always discuss concerns with the class
teacher to begin with. It is helpful to share
concerns in this way whether related to school or
home.
- If parents wish to discuss concerns further, the
Infant or Junior Co-ordinators are available to meet
parents, usually with the class teacher.
- The Deputy Head or Head can see parents if the
concern is more serious.
- The Parent Governor is available for parents to
contact at any time.
- The Board of Governors will address matters of
concern, but usually only after parents have
discussed the matter with the teaching staff and/or
the Parent Governor.
We hope that these simple procedures will help
parents fell that any concerns they may have, or issues
they wish to share with the staff, can be considered
efficiently and easily considered. We all believe that
open communication is the best way to work together, and
so benefit the children.
CLUBS: There is a programme of lunchtime and
after-school clubs run by teachers. There are also some
private clubs organised separately. After school clubs
run from 3.10 to 4.00 pm. Days are allocated at the
start of each term for parents to sign up for club
places.
CLOSURE: In the rare event that the Study Group
has to close at short notice (e.g. because of severe
weather conditions), parents will be informed as soon as
possible by means of a telephone tree. Additional
details will be posted on the website.
CURRICULUM: The curriculum encompasses all the
activities in the Study Group in both formal and less
formal learning situations. It is also the expression
and practical application of the Study Group aims.
The Study Group follows the English National Curriculum
in a form modified to life in Turkey. We assess children
according to the tests completed by pupils in the UK,
and especially the SATs (Standardised Assessment Tests)
at the end of Year 6.
The curriculum covers the subjects of English,
Mathematics, Science and I.C.T. (Information and
Communication Technology) as ‘core’ subjects. The other
‘foundation’ subjects are History, Geography, Design and
Technology, Art and Design, Music and Physical
Education.
Full details of the curriculum are available via the
school office. This includes the structure of the
curriculum for the Foundation Stage and Key Stages 1 and
2. Details of work for individual year groups can also
be supplied on request.
Religious Education: This is not taught as a
separate subject, but incorporated in the work of the
class through topics and especially within personal and
social education. Our approach also provides an
opportunity to study world religions and morality.
Turkish: children from Years 1 – 6 have lessons
which cover Turkish language and culture. These provide
a background to living in Turkey as well as practical
support in everyday language.
Sex Education: This is taught as a subject and
for older classes meetings are held with parents to
discuss the material used in lessons. Parents can
withdraw their children from these lessons, but only
after discussion with the school.
CURRICULUM
MEETINGS: These are held during the year, in order
to give parents the opportunity to see how certain
subjects are covered in the Study Group. They are
designed as interactive meetings, where parents can
either observe children or be involved in practical work
on curriculum areas.
