All children should possess, or have the potential to develop, adequate English language skills to follow and contribute to the teaching programme.

At Foundation Stage to Year 2: all non-native speakers to be assessed in Ankara by interview. All native speakers can come to be assessed, but we would normally not require this. However, if deemed appropriate an interview may be required.

For Years 3– 6: every child needs to complete an age appropriate test using English language. This is to be done in Ankara, or under exam conditions at their current school. The requirement for current school reports continues. If deemed appropriate an interview may be required.

If any children admitted require additional support in English language, parents will be required to pay for such support.

Reception to Year 6

i) All applicants must complete a Study Group registration form and provide a full school report in English. Applications are reviewed during late April and early May for the main entry into the new school year. In order to be considered at this time, complete applications (this includes the application fee, school reports, photos, any required assessment and/or interviews) must be received by the BESG by the end of April. Applications received after this time will be considered in August. Pupils arriving in Ankara during the school year will be assessed as they apply.

ii) Provided they meet the normal admission requirements the following criteria will be used in order to offer places in any age group:-

1. Children of the staff of the British Embassy, the British Council, the British Institute of Archaeology and other affiliated bodies that may be defined by the British Ambassador.
2. Siblings of current pupils.
3. Order on the waiting list by:
     a) Siblings of current pupils
     b) Date of application
4. Date of application.

*The waiting list is the group of pupils who were at the agreed standard, but for whom there were no places. Assuming they make progress during the year to reach the expected standard, applicants remain at this level.

If a place becomes available during the year the same criteria will be used.

iii) In the selection process, priority of admission will be according to the pupil’s (and parents) level of English.

iv) Siblings will not automatically be accepted if the appropriate class is full.

v) Where all other factors are equal, priority will usually be given to children who have already begun their education in an English-medium school.

Nursery

i) Admission of all applicants is contingent upon available space, with the maximum class size being 16.

ii) Priority will be given as for Reception to Year 6 (see above).

iii) Children accepted into the Nursery will not be guaranteed automatic entry into Reception.

Parents of Turkish children should understand that the BESG does not give a certificate of Turkish primary school leaving certificate.
